Placing fields on the page
Placement is exact and deterministic: you set a field’s position, size, and page on the canvas, and autofill stamps the value at that same spot every run.
The template studio shows your base PDF on a canvas. Pick a field type from the toolbar above the preview, then click the canvas: a new field lands at that point with a write zone of default size. Drag the corners to resize, or drag the box to move it. You'll need a template with a base PDF and at least one field, with the studio open.
Write zones vs. read zones
A placement on the canvas is a write zone: the rectangle where a value gets stamped on the output. A field can have several write zones (the same value in multiple spots, or a transform placed separately from the original). Extracted inputs can also carry read zones, rectangles on the source document marking where the AI should look for a value. Write zones decide where data goes out; read zones decide where it comes in.
The system never guesses where values land. The template config is the source of truth: a value lands exactly where you placed it, not where the AI thinks it should go. The one opt-in exception is Document reflows (toggle in the template's details dropdown, reached by clicking the template name in the editor toolbar), which lets AI reposition fields at fill time to follow content that shifts between fills. See Source tabs.

Drawing read zones
Read zones belong to extracted inputs: they tell the AI where on the source document to look. Open the field card and expand the extracted input in its Inputs section, then in the Read zones subsection click Add read zone. A rectangle drops at the page center; drag and resize it (same corner-drag and arrow-key nudge as write zones) to cover the region where the value appears. Each read zone's expanded row offers two interpretation options: Use Vision AI (read the visual region directly, for signatures, stamps, photos) and Use OCR Instructions (for scanned or image-only regions with no text layer). Its Page picker moves it between pages; the Remove read zone trash button deletes it.
Placing fields with the AI chat
You can also ask the Workspace AI chat to place fields, which is useful when setting up a new template from scratch. Describe each field in plain language: its name, where its value comes from (typed in per case, a fixed value, or extracted from documents), and which printed label it belongs next to. The AI reads the source document, finds the right spot, drafts the placements, and applies them once you confirm. If a field lands on the wrong line, say so ("the Address ended up on the Contractor line, move it one line lower") and the AI re-places it honoring your correction. Manual canvas placement always remains available for fine-tuning.
